It’s time for another snippet from my WIP for the weekly Weekend Writing Warriors. If you want to know more about this blog hop, click the link or the logo to read about it and get your link listed.
I’ve been using snippets from my WIP currently called STOPPING BULLETS. My main character is a young woman, Justine, with a talent for stopping bullets and moving other things with her mind. She lives a secretive life to avoid becoming a lab rat somewhere. But her secret isn’t going to stay secret much longer.
Posting small snippets like this is a unique exercise, perhaps because it takes your lines out of context, when usually we’re trying to put that in. I learn things just by taking eight sentences away from the rest of the scene and see if it stands up by itself. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. Not sure about today…
Anyway, to update: last week the waitress Justine’s working with chewed her out a bit for getting a little manic with the cleaning. She was just trying to keep her brain from working enough to tell her to be terrified. (For the full story so far, see my past SSS posts! The first one is here.) For context, the final line of that last post was, “’Just trying to keep busy.’” And trying not to throw up.”
Here’s the next eight!
I delivered a new order to the kitchen, where the smells of grease and cooking meat were stronger. Will Quinn show up for dinner? My brain clamped down on the thought. Just take the orders, serve the food, and clear the tables. Rinse and repeat.
“Miss, is our food ready yet?” A blue-haired gnarled woman in a booth frowned at me.
Maria was suddenly at my side.
Work in progress here, but please let me know what you think!
